Authors that spring to mind:

Isaac Asimov (Foundation series is incredible, as are his Robot novels and short stories)
Julian May - The Many Coloured Land series is superb
Clive Barker - particularly The Books of Blood and The Damnation Game
James Patterson - all fairly basic thriller stuff but very readable
William Gibson - not to everyone's tastes, try Burning Chrome (includes short story used as basis for the iffy Johnny Mnemonic film)
Iain Banks (Iain M Banks when he writes Sci Fi)

...that lot, IMHO, haven't written many 'duffers'

...and if you're looking for a thought provoking read, get "Them" by Jon Ronson - if you believe half of what's in that book then the world is a very scary place. :eek:
