Ok - bad example - I think the whole issue with the music industry is a mess, and I forsee that the market will have to change, with the middle-men effectively cut out of the loop. One reason for this view is that the product (the music itself) can now be produced and distributed at high quality by the band themselves, and they have the opportunity to keep all the profit. This isn't the case in almost all other media industries....certainly not games and movies, which have and will benefit from copy protection, as it's completely possible to protect them without affecting the quality of the end product in any way.

Back to the original point I was making; I would personally be wary of using a network aware product that was not properly licenced. In fact, if it's a beta release, there could easily be a license aggreement included somewhere that allows the publisher to retrieve information accross the internet on the games use, and where it was installed.
I'm not a lawyer, and even though the company I work for is in this field, I'm only in the IT side, so I don't have any 'inside' information. Just personal opinions.
