Mid-life daydreams

Post by -ReHaB- »

Ok I'm an old fella (almost 38 ) thats reached a point where I look back and see...no adventure..a lack of spontaneity and like a lot of people before me I feel I missed out on something.
So I'm learning to ride a motorbike. Just took my first day out (including the CBT) yesterday and I'll do another 3 days then take my test.

I'm I mad? did anyone else do their bike test late in life?

BTW I'm also planning on doing my HGV

Having similar sort of thoughts now, I cant see myself working for the next 30 years, doing same sort of thing, then retiring. Seems such a waste, I want to take a risk or 2 now, try and earn some mega bucks, then enjoy life for a bit.

Nah, I passed my bike test when I was...erm, about 18 I think.
Had a few bikes, ending with a Suzuki GSXF600. I enjoyed it, but I don't think I'd get one again because while they are intermittantly fun, they are actually also a royal pain in the arse. I remember getting off after a ride and not being able to feel my fingers because of the cold..having 'helmet hair' and the damned visor fogging all the time. Oh, and feeling hot and sweaty in the leathers (mind you, the ladies seemed to like them).

I had a phase (not mid life) of doing some more interesting things - did fixed wing gliding and balooning, which were both excellent fun.
As I said in the other thread, I think hard drugs and guns is the way to go.

(I do want a tattoo though)

Go out and DO stuff!
It's sad to look back and think that you can no longer up and travel the world, because you have commitments that prevent you going.

I agree with Woz. If I were 19 again I would get on a bike and travel Europe then South America. Just working for petrol, food and lodging in that order :D

Once you have kids you have responsabilities. So do it now!

Bullet, don't be so worried mate, there's actually a name for this syndrome, where people in there early and late 20's have these mid life type crisis.

I can't remember what the precise name is, but people who are 18 now have far more pressure than I had then + it's just 10 years ago.

Anyhoo, I'm in Canada, I wonder why?

Oh and Woz, go and kick a mcdonalds window in, it does wonders for letting go of your responsibilities. See you at the next WTC :)

Oh, believe me, this is one thing we agree on : I've not eaten in a MacNasty's for over 20 years now, and I won't do so either.
HATE the place, HATE it.
More so since the McLibel trial.

By the way - what's a WTC? Oh, World Trade Conference?
Bunch of Anarchist muppets who won't actually change a thing, sadly.
They need to get some decent PR. The whole Fair Trade movement has achieved more than they ever will.
In fact, Bono has achieved more than they ever will.

Edit - interestingly - I heard on the news tonight that there's hope for a vaccination for Malaria, which could potentially save up to 1million people a year. I think it's the number one cause of death for children in the third world.
Guess who's largely responsible for this potential vaccine?

Bill Gates gets a raw deal. He's one of the worlds remaining philanthopists (I can't spell that for toffee) and should be praised for his efforts. He gives so much (as a proportion of income, before someone shoots him down) that only a few (maybe saltair for example?) can compete with him in the last century.

Shit - we're agreeing on two points here!
Hatred of Macdonald's and admiration for Bill Gates...Right, let's try this :

Controlled market forces are currently the best way to manage the world's resources.

There is no such thing as controlled market forces.

Did you know that - as a CEO/MD of a company you are LEGALLY bound to make as much money as you can for the shareholders AT ANY COST.

So all this talk of environmental friendliness, safety for users (famous with GM and its cost benefit analysis of 50 deaths to 5 million cars, when placing the fuel drum closer to the bumper - sure you will need to pay 4 million in settlements, but will make 9 from the cost saving) etc is rubbish, the company cares nothing for anything but profit.

Therefore, the only way a "controlled market force" will happen, is when its too late and the consumer (meaning the MAJORITY of consumers) makes a decision not to purchase on moral or scientific grounds. The only time a consumer will make that decision is when there lives are DIRECTLY affected by the issues - in the case of global climate, that will be FAR too late.

So shove your "controlled market forces" up your jacksie my love. Until a MD is legally allowed to cut profits in favour of corporate responsibility, it's just not going to work.

In a nutshell, the corporation CANNOT give any funds towards any moral duty , unless it is profitable. Sure, an MD can do it out of his own pocket, but thats peanuts compared to the profits of the corporation.

The corporation is raping the world for profits at the moment and unfortuanately, as long as people have their fast cars, fast women and I-Pods, they are not going to give a shit about the consequences for future generations - therefore they will not make the corporations less profitable, therefore we are b0rked mate, b0rked. Since the Corporation now owns the governments (see WTC, see Globalisation, see decline of rights, taxes etc in the western world to stop companies relocating, see the exploitation of workers by nearly EVERY high street clothes company, in far eastern countries and india... etc etc etc)

yeah great control of the worlds resources hey, with SUV's unrestricted here in Canada and the US that guzzle more fuel than you would ever believe, or Coke and its manufacture of cans that cost 11 litres of fuel EACH 6 pack)

There you go Wozzy baby, hows that ;)
