Do NOT get a rear projection TV if you're going to use your Xbox360 (or any console) on it, they can't handle it.
I'm NOT tight, I'm careful!

How about this?

Seriously though, I'm interested what you go for as we're thinking of a new TV as well.
The old one's on it's way out; but at the moment all the TVs that have what I'd be looking for (HDTV-ready & integrated Freeview) all seem a little over-priced.
That Panasonic looks OK, may be tempted by one with a smaller screen (I'd probably be looking for 35-40" sized TV).
Hopefully the price will drop as HDTV TVs become more widespread - I'm just not sure if my TV will last that long.

I managed to get a 32" Sony Bravia HDTV (one of the new ones) the 17" Panny and a £220 stand for £1650 from Currys by haggling the guy down.

To be honest I would find anything larger to show up the artifacts of Sky and standard TV picture degredation due to the crystal clear picture on the new Bravias.

However when I run HDTV movies from the PC thru it, I am frankly amazed with the picture quality.

You mean this one ?

..hmm looks pretty good and I've always liked Sony TVs.
It doesn't have integrated digi-tuner, but then I guess you can pick up an external box pretty cheap anyway.

What are you babbling on about that pretty much standard resolution for a 42" HD Plasma.

Check here

1080p 1,920x1,080 Progressive and rare ATM. No 42" Plasmas support this resolution. A few LCD do but they are expensive and LCD still suck for TV viewing.

1080i 1,920x1,080 nonprogressive most plasmas will support this. SkyHD will support this resolution.

720p 1,280x720 Progressive and arguably the best resolution for plasma displays as it is closer to the native resolution of the screen. Sky HD will support this resolution too.

Wide-screen 480p 852x480 your standard (for NTSC) DVD resolution.

Regular TV Up to 480 lines Non progressive not HD pretty crap but we've lived with it a long time.

Samsung SP42Q2HDX £700

Need to get one fast its killing me this. I supose the 2nd one will come in handy ready for my new XBOX, still not too sure.

That is an ALiS panal and best left alone. I had better qualify this statment by saying that I don't like the look of the ALiS panel. That doesn't mean you won't. Go to the AVforums and ask about them.

I said babbling because you made a statment about something you clearly know little about. Sorry Barra I didn't mean to offend just stating the facts.

The best thing to do is work out how much you can spend and narrow your choices down then go out to a Large curry's store with a copy if your favourite DVD and ask to try it on the screens you like. Make sure they use a decent component or HDMI connection and a HDMI DVD player. Stand about 3 meters from a 42" screen. Tell the pushy sales monkey that you need time to make your mind up then go home and buy the one you prefered online.

The most ridiculous thing I have read today. I have one, 43 inch sony, which looks damn fine with an xbox connected to it. The next tv I am going for, this sagem model is rear projection, and HDTV ready.

I saw that Sagem in Curry's they had a HTPC setup and it looked stunning with the WMHD video files. Not sure what it will look like with a standard picture though. I expect not to good. Should be great with the 360 though.

It also has 2 HDMI connections which means you don't have to keep swapping plugs from your DVD player to your SkyHD box. The resolution is of course a fairly standard 1280 x 720.

hehe you are all suckers for technology :)

Wasn't it just 24 months ago or less that you were all breaking the bank for plasma/tft?

(If my 5 year old panasonic widescreen beast was here, with me - I would stroke it)

Replace the tv rather than repair it. It will probably go again in the next few months. I am covered for extended warranty under my house insurance should anything go wrong at home. Praise the lord.
