Doom 3 Release Put Back

Post by dodgy_dave »

just had a look on play cos i thought it was supposed to be released soon and it says its not coming out now till 08/10/2004 :( and theres talk that it might get pushed back to 2005 as well.

anybody heard anything about why its been pushed back?

i heard someone say that id are remaking a lot of it after they tested it and realised it was crap or something, though i don't know how true that is. I d/led the beta version that was around and it looked well good, even though it was unfinished.

Im hardly surprised, its getting to the stage now where if they release an ok game, people are going to slate it as the hype machine has been in action for too long. ahem - *duke nukem forever*

You get the feeling that they had something pretty good - then got scared by how much better HL2 looked and went back for another go. :D

I have to disagree - they are under pressure to release this and recoup the money spent on development.

If they are putting it back it is not for any competitive reason.

Doom (and possibly Castle Wolfenstien) is the fundamental reason games like HL2 exist... in my opinion.

Doom and HL are both pace setters in FPS's, Doom I imagine is being put back for the same reason as HL2 has been put back, expectations are going to be incredibly high for those of us that enjoyed the originals.

The new Doom won't let me down if they don't release for another 2 years and it looks like Space Invaders in comparison to other games at the time of release... as long as it has the atmosphere I remember back in the day and doesn't play like Space Invaders I'll still love it :D

I've played a Beta version of a couple of levels of doom by the way, full of bugs and took a week to load up, but my god the graphics and atmosphere were both fantastic :)

I've not seen a single person on the net suggest this, but might they be stalling until enough people have systems that can actually run the damned games?
It would hardly be a good idea to release a game that, while groundbreaking, will not sell well initially because the average machine is not powerful enough.

Bear in mind that the main profit is made from a game on its initial launch (some exceptions here obviously). A short time after the launch the bootlegs and pirate versions are out there that suck the sales away.

And before you all shout 'far cry' - that's coming from a software house that's not yet established in the market and wants to make it's mark big time, so they may be less concerned about the above and instead be pushing the envelope technology wise.

Just my tuppence worth.

I never thought of it that way. im the sort of person that game houses/hardware companies must love. When something new comes out games wise, if it needs a bells and whistles machine to play it, then I will go and upgrade to it. I was saving myself this time until HL2 came out before I did the next upgrade. I guess its a bit different for the rest of the gameplaying society, Little Johnny wants to play this game, but his parents wont buy a fuck off gfx card just for one game, they will wait till they can buy a new pc in 12 months time which will do it.

thats what i thought, after playing around with the controls for a bit, i managed to alter the lighting somehow, i went round a corner and through a load of smoke/mist you could see the shadow of one of the monster coming towards you and it looked brilliant. If the beta made me think how good it looked the proper version will most likely be amazing.

holding the game back due to technology issues may be part of the problem with pushing doom 3 and HL2 back, but i'm not sure its that big a factor tbh ( i could be wrong though). A lot of the money they'll make from the game is through partnerships with graphics companies, where valve/id say you need an ATI card to get the best from the games so everyone who buys it rushes out to buy a card they didn't really want before they got the game.

I bought an ATI radeon 9600XT 128mb with a HL2 voucher (i actually did need a better one anyway) cos i thought it would run the game at a decent level, but if the game isn't released for another 6months to a year its probably not going to which will be feckin great.

Should have probably mentioned the fact that it took a week to load up despite me having a P4 3.2 gig with a GeForce FX 5600 256 card with 'go faster stripes' on my cpu... and dice, let's not forget the dice.

I seriously do not care how the producers of the new doom make my money, wether it be from hardware I have to buy (and i wil) to run it or the software itself.

Twas the greatest game ever

Now, talking of good games would Elite work now ?

I signed up to an online survey about 3 years ago which was to make the guy who wrote Elite to make a version for the pc. Good to see people power still works. :/

Or is the memory we have of great games like Elite better placed exactly where it is now, in our minds.

Who's watched a good film that held quite significant memories during your childhood only to be mildly disapointed when u watch it again in your latter years.

Nah, fek that bring back vector graphics with indepth gameplay any time

I love to play ufo:enemy unknown, because the game rocks. Ok I know that the graphics suck and some of the physics are down right silly, but the game still has great gameplay appeal to me.
When doom3 and hl2 come out, I will need a new graphics card, as I only bought this one (geforce fx5200) six months ago on a budget, and it sucks at games now :( It will just fall over if I tried them on my pc.
I wish I'd got one of those aldi pc's as that would have done the trick for me.

You know you could a pc of a similar spec for that price, even better of you choose not to have stuff you wont use. Depends if you are comfy with building pc's or not.

I can build pc's.
This was originally:-
p3 450
voodoo3 2000
12.7 gig hd
etc.....
only thing left of is now is the monitor and the case :D
Pretty much everything else has been upgraded by me.

That aldi pc looked sweet for the price, and then I would have had 2 gaming spec pcs to play on :)

Cool. From what I can gather, all the pc's that aldi have sold have been really good. I always tell people who ask me to build them a pc to go and buy one of the aldi deals, one reason is the spec is always high, second reason is when you work out the cost of the components its only a bit cheaper to build your own, third reason is no hastle when ppl fuck things up.

I priced up the compenents in the Aldi PC - it came to £650 from micro direct.

And then you get 3 years on site warranty with the Aldi PC - easily making up the £100!!!

And less hassle of picking the wrong components and static-killing half of them.
