Music suggestions

Post by Sander »

Ok Dark Wulfs topic about Goths has started some good healty discussion about different taste in music.

I have always listened to more different styles. But this also means I miss a lot of new bands. Almost all the new cd's I buy are of bands who already broke up some time ago. So what's new and hip?

Who has some good suggestion about your fav. music? What is worth to download?

Also what is the best p2p program to find mp3's?

Here is my suggestion to you:

don't buy the new cd of the prodigy, it sucks....

(edit: corrected my spelling a bit)

best p2p is soulseek, get it from here

http://www.slsknet.org/download.html

make sure you download ONLY from this site, as it's the offical one, which doesn;t try to charge you / fill your PC up with spyware. Initally started as a p2p to exchange obscure electronic music, now best program for music in general, and also the place to find obscure stuff.

As for music, I dunno about new stuff, what sort of thing do you fancy?

but old stuff, get hold of :

Johnny Cash american recordings series.

Annie - The greatest hit (not annie lennox) or anything, might not be your usual bag, but I defy anyone not to like it, for a summer's day / trying to pull.

try Badgers site for full on sludge-core-doom-goth-somethingorother-metal (he tells me what he play's I ignore him) or our other mates site.

www.crashconvention.com sort of garagey rock.

dunno what else. always had a soft spot for Husker Du.

try and get brainfreeze by DJ shadow & Cut chemist for some cut up funk,

or the ...As heard on Radio soulwax mixes by 2manyDJ's for wicked mixes of rock with dance with weird bits and pieces.

EDIT: Oh yeah read up how soulsek works in the FAQ's before going on a download marathon as you may find yourself banned by the people your downloading from PDQ as it's not like a convential kazaa / overnet style p2p.

I ******** hate goths :)

Well judging by your comments on the other topic, check out either

Temple of the Dog - Temple of the Dog
or
Alice In Chains - Facelift.

/both sorta Led Zep old style rock with a grungy/bluesy influence; and both (imho) classic albums.
- but neither particularly hip and both bands split up some time ago (actually Alice In Chains singer died and Temple of the Dog was a one off project, but anyway...)

Well, I like most music but really like rock (especially the old Seattle scene - Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains) but also like the old favourites of Pink Floyd, Led Zep, Deep Purple, Dylan, Cream and Hendrix - but actually will listen to most things as long as they play REAL instruments and have an iota of talent.

As for new stuff - Im really liking Jet at the moment (bit of a Rolling Stones influence but hey I like it!) - will probably purchase their album at some point :)

I've got the last album of mr. Cash (still need to buy it though)

I've also listened to the old cd of 2manydj's it's fun but only for 1 time.

By Annie, I hope you are not thinking of Annie the musical?

Have you heard of "free" I've got their album Fire and Water, it's got a great number called mister Big (their biggest hit is Allright now).

I actualy prefer the 70's music, although I do have a DVD of the King....

I've also bought a DVD of Rage against the machine, but my neighbours don't let me play it anymore.....

p.s. i've looked for richersounds in amsterdam, but could not find it :(
still bought the Arcam set, sounds great

no this Annie

this was the record where I was gonna send you round to kill the dude if he didn't send it to me, as I got it from some guy in Holland. I take it you know about Audioslave, if you like RATM.

also try and get the Johnny Cash boxset, he does a version of Redemption Song by Bob Marley with Joe strummer, very very good.

Janes Addiction are one of my favourite bands (next to Stereophonics and Metallica). Strays is a damn good album, but its a shame the band broke up again. Definately going to pop down HMV and look for their older releases though when I get the chance.

If you want some good bands and live round the London / Surrey area, pop your radio on to 104.9FM as they have a rock show (with a lot of metal) on Saturday evenings with a lot of bands like Janes Addiction, Placebo and Franz Ferdinand on during the day. Good station in my opinion and excellent for finding new bands to listen to (it's how I found out aboiut Janes Addiction for a start :D)

I also like the "one" and "personal jesus" covers, I'll look for the box at my fav. store.

Actualy I've just downloaded audioslave, haven't listened to it much though (still need to burn it onto disc for cd player).

Have you heard the new band of Slash (of guns'nroses)?

Did you get the album of Annie?

Actualy I live in Holland, so no chance for the radio :(
Here we have Kink FM (you can tune in via http://www.garnierstreamingmedia.com/asx/kinkfm.asp ) It's THE alternative station.

Have you guys heard of the Dutch band "The Gathering" it's a bit metal / house a bit strange, but still I like it....

Thats not a bad station. I'll have to do a search for more foreign alternative stations in future and see what they have that isn't in the UK :)

Janes Addiction are great - their first album (Ritual de Habitual, or something like that iirc) was one of my favourites years ago...wanders off to dig through CD collection)

Oh, and Sander, here's what/who/why "Temple of the Dog" was all about - you may be able to track it down, if not get in touch.

The mentioned "Mother Love Bone - Apple" is also a great album - a bit hard to define, but glam-grunge kinda gives you an idea.

Yeah Pink Floyd are fantastic, only first listened to them a week ago. I am now converted.
