They're awesome, I love 'em :) I'm not a huge fan of Strays really, but it is still good. But come on Winter :p Ritual is their second album, not even including the eponymous kind-of-live-extended-ep-lets-say from the eighties :) Which I've spent some of this evening trying to bend back into shape (on vinyl) so it'll play properly :*( Doh. I've not heard it yet, jsut picked it up from the local s/h record shop :/

Which DT album are you "likeing"? :) They're pretty much my favourite contempory group (equal with Josh Homme anyway).

Of course they are :p What have yo listened to / like so far? If The Wall onwards, get Meddle onwards; or if DSOTM onwards then get their first two albums (the second, A Saucerful of Secrets, is spinning along happily next to me now :) ).

 I never heard of any pre-Ritual stuff - always thought that was their first one...

Never really got into them - the vocalist has a voice that I just don't like - did quite like one track ("killing floor" maybe - its been years since I listened to them). I'm assuming its the same band.

Probably "Wish You Were Here" for me too.
The guitar work on that is unbelievable.

But I love pretty much everything they've done; yes, even the Bicycle song. :D

has anyone actualy tried the DSOFTM / Wizard of Oz thing. Where you play the album and the film simutaneously and theres lots of weird conicidences. Cash riegisters in money going off as the film turns colour or etc etc. Or is it just a case of too much acid and too much time on hippy hands.

Heh it's nuts

Are you sure though - my copy says "A Saucerful of Secrets"

Wish You Were Here might just be my favourite too :) But, although they're great, I usually skip tracks 2 and 3 as they're just too different - the only reason why I might say I prefer Animals :)

Great stuff :D Make sure you get Train of Thought, their latest, too then :) Although it's very different to their earlier stuff - every album is different.

Shame :) As I said all the albums are very different, so maybe give something else a go sometime ;) The vocals can be a bit hard to listen to I know... He was trained operatically, and has a few annoying habits. They at one point considered being an instrumental band though, and the music itself is technically amazing so carries a wow factor even if you don't like it :D

Ooh just thought, if it's been ages since you've heard them you might be thinking of a different vocalist (who IS crap and sang on the first album, which includes The Killing Hand if that's what you're thinking of :) )

Surprised no-one's mentioned Nine Inch Nails yet.
One of his (Trent Reznor's) songs was covered by Cash - Hurt.
If you want something that will REALLY upset the neighbours, then Trent's your man. He also does some really upsetting stuff with studio trickery. There's one song where there are children making an upsetting moaning sound, and on a good system, the sound appears to move behind you: he does something wierd with taking the different channels out of phase.

Can take some getting into, but his stuff is great, if a little...erm...bitter and depressing.

I do have The White album and a cd of Neil Diamond (can't remember which).

But the above singers / bands are (to me) more background musicians, where as Tool, Nirvana etc. are more bands you actualy listen to.

For example: I'm now working (and surfing the net a bit) and I'm listening to Miles Davis. If i was to play Nirvana, little work would be done.

NiN are great, don't have a cd of them, only a DVD but I don't play it that much anymore, to chaotic....

I'm also surprised there everybody mentioned more male singers / bands then female artist (no I don't mean Britney).

What about:
Hole
Patty Smith
Alison Krauss
Tori Amos
Lauren Hill
etc.

B.T.W. have any of you heard the album of The Distillers, ft. Courtney Love?

I have to say the Punk is fun :)

OK - if we're not sticking with the heavier end of the market, here's a list of my favourites (some of these are probably mentioned in another thread waaaay back):

Barenaked Ladies - Canadian Singer Songwriters - famous for One Week single. Best live act I've ever seen bar none. Very strong lyrically, and fantastic musicians. Standout Track - maybe too many to list, but for me it would have to be Call and Answer.

Amy Mann - singer-songwriter mainly known for the soundtrack to Magnolia, which was actually made because the director loved her music so much. Standout track - Wise Up (the one they sing along to in Magnolia)

Plus-Tech Squeezebox - mental Japanese j-pop/punk/lounge. Impossible to describe, but their album's the first one to make me grin from beginning to end when I first heard it. Standout track - Early Riser

Pizzicato Five - Japanese lounge/pop. Were at one time the biggest band in Japan. I first heard them on a skate video and it took me 2 years to find out who they were as they weren't credited. Standout track - Tricky Tricky.

Alabama 3 - Acid/country/hip-hop/blues combo. They feature harmonica's heavily, which means I love them from the start. If you like Blues, then they are defnitely worth a listen. Standout track - well, they're best known for the opening credit song from The Sopranos, Woke up this Morning.

Pixies - possibly the best band there ever was. Stand out track....well, I like Vamos, but it's pretty raw. Planet of Sound is good too, if only for the line "this is the planet of sound, this ain't no fuckin' around".....

Belle and Sebastian - genius, if a little fey, pop. Lyrics are much darker than the music suggests. Known (if at all) for beating S-Club Seven in the best newcomers award at the Brits (which REALLY pissed off Pete Waterman  It turned out that Belle and Sebastian only have about 10,000 fans worldwide, but they pretty much ALL voted, whereas SClub morons couldn't use the internet unless their mums were present). Stand out track, well, I really like Judy and the Dream of Horses, but you need to listen to quite a bit of their stuff really.

Jayhawks and Golden Smog - alt.country/americana bands. You can get away with admitting to liking these two without having to admit liking country music and all the baggage that carries with it.

Little Walter - fucking awsome blues harmonica player. Long dead, so his records are cheap if you can find them.

Muddy Waters - best bluesman by far in my humble. See above for pricing of his albums.

Weezer - great summery surf punk music.

Blur's latest, Think Tank, is absolutely great.

Bjork - Vespertine. One of my favourite albums of all time. Difficult, but rewarding. Vespertine Live on DVD is sublime to watch.

Beastie Boys - Ill Communication would also be one of my top albums, but all of their albums are worth a listen. The In Sound From Way Out is a fantastic BB instrumental album in the style of 70's blaxploitation movies....track it down - it's normally very cheap and makes a good one to put on for parties/porn movies.

Newish artists :
Franz Ferdinand - New New Wave for the naughties. A bit like Adam Ant's first album Dirk Wears White Sox, but not as good. Mind you, what is? Dirk... is one of the best albums of the 70's / early 80's.
Scissor Sisters - Elton John for the naughties....
Bic Runga - if you like Norah Jones/Katie Melua you'll probably like Bic.

In order to destroy any credibility I have left, I'll also admit to liking Robbie Williams, and I think he's one of the best 'entertainers' that the UK have produced in a very long time.... /hides behind sofa

I've got a bit of a wide range of tastes, from the old heavy punky stuff through some melodic semi jazz to the odd modern thingy :)

Bands I'd agree with so far,

PJ Harvey
Pixies
BNL - agree with woz, they were hilarious live,, but best gig i think goes to Violent Femmes for me.
Janes addiction

will be going to see Nick Cave in September (cash permitting)
All collections should have something by Jello Biafra.

If you're looking for something newish you'd do worse than Mando Diao,
Swedish outfit, really good live.

fans of nightwish should be shot, same for belle & sebastian turgid pap,, but thats just my opinion.

I've bought a new stereo some weeks ago, it's always fun to rediscover your own cd collection.

Temple of Dogs is a good album, but heard it to often.

I have the same with the Smashing Pumkings, their cd Siamese Dream rocks, but after 3 or 4 times it goes back to the rack and remains there for another 6 months...

I've just bought a cd of Lambchop, it's great...

Anyway i'm saving up some cash again for another trip to the music store....

So far the only cd's on my list to buy are K's choice, Scissor Sisters, Franz Ferdinand and I might buy A Girl Called Eddy, heard some songs of it...
