Deadwood...

Post by Woz »

Holy crap! That was a shock ending to this week's ep, and no mistake.

PS. if you're not currently following this series you're missing out on one of the best things to come out of the US since....well since Cowboys and Injuns.

It's repeated on Sky1 mix....get your TiVo to look out for it.
You won't regret it.

DO NOT put it on when there are kids within earshot. It's got the most extreme language I've ever heard on any format - movies or telly.

Interestingly, I've not heard that one once in Deadwood - too modern....there were about 4 instances of the word c*nt in a single exchange between two characters last week. This week, the c<extremely rude word> was 'only' used twice that I noticed.

Cocksucker is used every other sentence by our boy McShane though.

It's apparently historically accurate use of the language. Having looked up the history of the west, it looks like the story has many historical truths in it as well (although the details are sometimes extrapolated or changed).

Edit : and if you only saw Lovejoy (I didn't personally) and thought Ian McShane was pretty innocuous, you should watch this and see if he doesn't cut a pretty terrifying figure.

watching a movie the other night with Woody Harrelson in!

He said 'if a man builds a thousand bridges to link the world and sucks one dick, he wont be remembered as a bridge builder, but a cock sucker'

too true...

wonder if Deadwood is coming to terrestrial tv?
I guess there is no one to blame

I would be stunned to be honest. There is no way on earth it could be edited to tone down the language.

yeah I forgot about that! (and sorry for any homophobic references in my last post!! it wasnt meant like that!)

I do have sky but cant watch it that much so really I usually wait for 24 etc to come on to BBC - maybe Channel 4 may take a risk with it as they sometimes like to push the boundaries? all they ever seem to show at the moment is bloody Friends repeats! Deadwood looks good tho

i've been watching too,,, as for your c word count woz,,, I seem to remember a conversation at a card table, where the 'gentleman' who perpretates the act we shall not mention for spoiler reasons :) fits in 3 or 4 in one go along with class insults like. "shut up c***, sat there with,,(pauses looking for suitable insult), your eye, like a big c***""

you're right,, don't see them going for it on terrestrial somehow!

Spoiler.....well, only for people who know their wild west history...and then not really without making a leap:
Incidentally - that act that we shall not name appears to be pretty historically accurate....well broadly. I've found several accounts about it that differ, but broadly they all agree on the outcome and where it happened.
And yes - Deadwood did exist and was a lawless town for the reasons that are vaguely covered in episode 1.

if you like Deadwood then watch Unforgiven - on channel 5 at 9! Clint Eastwood, Gene Hackman and Morgan Freeman (WOW) and 100% bona fide classic. one of greatest films of our generation and won couple of oscars too.

just gonna watch it now

I'm up to episode 6 of this and very impressed - not got Sky One so downloading it instead.

Regards historical accuracy, the infamous individual killed in episode 4 was in reality killed in Deadwood, by the same person as in the series, for the same reason (revenge for brother killed). And in reality he was also well acquainted with the infamous female following him around.

I don't *think* I've given any spoilers away there...
I wish to do more violence
