Some Unis also have leased lines that the Students pay towards out of their
loans / grants / whatever students get these days.

they dont have like their own exchange do they. I mean i was downloading from the network last night at an awsome speed and uploading even higher.

How is it tho that they can have so many pc`s and so much bandwidth. they musdt have hundreds of lines or maybe a direct link to an exchange.

i am just very curious! and bord

Probably a leased line. A dedicated Internet circuit.

They used to use JANET - Joint Academic Network in order to share the bandwidth across all the universities in the land with a internet PHAT pipe at Telehouse or at the main Internet Junction in London.

Don't know if that is still the case now though

JANET was still used when I was at Uni (a few years ago).

Downloading stuff at 3 megabits/sec (in 1998) = ownage. Though of course the total bandwidth available was a lot more than that.

They also have their own dedicated lines - I spent a lot of time at an offsite facility, one of a few, which all had a nice phat pipe back to the Uni.[/url]

I know some people, that on the last day of term at uni, they set up a quake/quake2 server. They knew nobody would check the machines until the end of the sumer holidays. They got some insane pings on a private server, considering they where on dialup

we recently upgraded from a 2 meg leased line to a 100 meg with a 10 meg laserlink to our remote site. We're also with JANET too.
during our research, the bandwidth in and out of the college never really tops the 2 meg barrier anyway, so me ane my team tend to have plenty to play with. :D

EDIT: mind you, we're a college, with some uni funding, so i'm sure that some uni's out there have a higher link.
