Well I'd just get an iPod. I have a 3rd gen 15gig model which is great, but my sister has a mini and despite my initial reservations about the 4gig of space, it's really good. They're about £180 too I think. My mate bought one of those iRivers and it had to go back to the manufacturer twice. He gave up in the end and got his money back.
I really fail to see the reason why so many people like the IPOD for 2 main reasons.
1. Price is way to high compared to the competition
2. Who really needs 40GB of MP3 unless you are planning on leaving for a jungle expedition for 2 years? is it actually possible to listen to 40gb of mp3 in 2 years 24/7 ?
Id go for a little 512MB one for less than 80 quid (small size, like a fat usb pen) if you dont plan on going away for say more than 2 weeks before u can add and remove music to it.
Think you can get an album per 40MB ?

I have a 1.5gb Muvo2 which is really nice and small and comes with a tiny USB cable you can carry around with you. It uses a mini hard drive so may not be suitable for running but the 512mb version is solid state* so it suitable.
*The solid state may come in a larger size now but I haven't checked.

I have a 40gig iriver and the sound is superb considering you are playing mp3.
It's not the listening of 40gb of music as I found it's having the choice of music to listen to, it depends on your mood at that particuakr time and how varied your taste is. I also use it as an external for work too and getting stuff from friends etc.
iriver is small and the black model is very attractive. Has a remote control so you don't have to show people that your carrying round a £200+ piece of kit on the train/Bus etc.
I agree with G@v though - you don't NEED 40gb of space. I reckon the 4gb would suffice or 5GB if you get the CREATIVE ZEN MICRO.

Is the iPod really that overpriced compared to the competition? From what I can gather equivalent 20gig and 4/5gig models from all manufacturers are pretty much the same price.
And even if there is a bit of a difference, it's still worth paying the little bit extra for the ease of use of the iPod. It really is fantastically designed, not all of the others are. Plus then you also get to use iTunes, perhaps the most intuitive and cleverly-designed piece of software on the planet. I did a course on HCI (Human-Computer Interaction) at uni and the iTunes is a model of usability.

I would go for iriver, they seem to be the best around just not very largely publisied in the UK they all have colour displays which means you can view images on tthem and the drop and drag connection is much better than using software (i.e ipod)
the h10 is 5gb for £190
h320 £270 or h320 lite for £220 (this has no remote but i think this is the only difference)
also with the free firmware upgrades the h320s can play videos at 10 fps,
i think its the mp3 player of choice.

Very strange how the largest har drive is the cheapest and the smallest is the most expensive!
Whch one then? Im likeing the Zen touch
