Unfortunately Cheap and Decent are usually mutually exclusive when looking at ISPs. I suggest you visit http://www.adslguide.org.uk and check out the forums for ISPs you are considering.

Why don't you post the ISPs you're considering and see if anyone here can comment on their experiences with them?

I recommend Zen, though they wont meet your criteria for "cheap."

I've been with Euro1net since leaving Telewest (due to reloaction) and can highly recommend them.

If I've had a problem my query has always been answered within 5 hours of emailing them - the second time they even telephoned me within 2 hours to try and sort the query out.

You do have to pay for your 6/12/24 month subscription up front (they have a £50 connection fee) but purchasing 24 months does have it's advantages too, those being a waivered connection fee and the £15.99 a month Unlimited 2Mb connection.

I have currently purchased the 12 month package (they threw in a Free Modem and an extra months subscription) and they said if at any time during my subscription I wish to upgrade to 24 months, then the connection fee will be refunded.

My first month I downloaded about 120GB and so far this month I'm on 85GB and everything is fine. Oh and decent enough pings too - about the same I used to get with Telewest (15-35)

Also, in case you didn't already know, NTL has removed the download caps
from their 1Mbps and 2Mbps services.

thought id let you get your laughs in.

on a more serious note does any one use wireless networking, looked around 3 properties today and they were all wireless based although one lot had bought a wirelesss/wired box and trailed cabels all over the place.
Are the wireless ones stable enough to game on with a decent ping?

We use a wireless router/modem and it's terrific. One PC upstairs, one downstairs. My laptop even gets about 60-70% signal in our garden (fine for web-browsing) . Before that we used a wired one and the only difference I've noticed is I don't trip over cables anymore !

I'm aware of people who have had issues with old, large houses (thick walls + rooms miles apart = potential problems).
This maybe something you need to consider as it describes a lot of student property !
I think it's possible to boost the signal or buy routers with stronger broadcast abilities but that's something you'd need to look into some more.
Depending on your budgets, you could always try a wireless setup and if it's no good, go out and buy some cabling (and drill some holes ;) ).

- On the ISP question, we've been on Nildram connection packages for years - certainly not the cheapest, but the connection is extremely reliable and they've sorted all the problems I've ever had (all two of them !) immediately - maybe worth checking them out.

I had my second threeway in Hull though, thanks to the Awful "The Tower" nightclub.

It did stink though.
