Want to be able to connect to drives at home if possible, without having to muck around with remote desktop. The router I have doesnt support hardware vpn, wondering if there is a software version I could use. The pc I am connecting to is running xp mce. I think I could do it if I was running a server platform, 2000 or 2003 server, but seems a bit overkill, and I have the pc running just right at the minute.
Any ideas?
Software VPN? Possible?

get a router that supports VPN
is there not a second hand vigor lying around
you can do it in XP Pro but doubt mce will have this ability

else if you just want access to data you could always just use an FTP server. I have one here if you want it.

Im running an ftp server, but its a PITA, I want to just be able to map a drive. The bigors are all adsl, I need the wan variant. Suppose I could jury rig one behind my current router, then point all vpn traffic at it to authenticate. Might give it a whizz. XP MCE is a home variant I think, it wont let me join a domain with it.

Worked really well mind.
Also could just open up your windows share port if its a temp thing, which I did once just to dump some files across.

If you're looking for something simple to run and don't mind running a closed source product and having your VPN connection mediated by a third party, then check out Hamachi at http://www.hamachi.cc/
On the other hand, if you want something more permanent then check out OpenVPN: http://openvpn.net/ which has a nice friendly Windows client: http://openvpn.se/
If you've got to negotiate firewalls at work that only allow HTTP/HTTPS then consider an SSL VPN option - a free open source version is available at http://www.sshtools.com/showSslExplorerCommunity.do - but you'll need to upgrade to the Enterprise edition if you want to map drives (it has a 30 day trial upgrade if I'm not mistaken).
I've used all of the above and Hamachi is probably best if you want to get up and running as quickly as possible. The others require a bit more effort. It all depends on your requirements and how much control you have over the network infrastructure at both ends of the VPN.
